GDATP (General Dynamics Armament and Technical Products) は米陸軍 TACOM LCMC
(Army Tank Automotive and Armaments Command Life Cycle Management Command)
から、M2HB (M2 Heavy Barrel) 重機関銃×3,500 挺を M2A1 仕様に改修する契約を 690 万ドルで受注した。

M2A1 では銃手のエラー低減、銃口炎の低減、銃身交換の迅速化といった改良を取り入れている。
